This $80,000 G-Shock Costs More Than a Porsche

Casio says the fundamental challenge while developing the MRG-D5000 was building a near-unbreakable watch using a material—blue sapphire crystal—that is inherently brittle.

The construction method, including virtually invisible seams alongside a completely screwless assembly, is apparently a process so demanding that only one person at Casio’s primary factory in Japan can currently perform the process.

The cheapest G-Shock you can buy right now costs $90.

This one costs $80,000,

more than a Patek Philippe and more than a Porsche Macan.

Meet the full sapphire MRG-D5000, a full G-Shock

with all the high-impact rugged specs that are required

for Casio to call a watch a super tough G-Shock,

but with a case made entirely from sapphire crystal.

Only 20 will ever be made,

but the origin story of this crazy Casio

goes back to the G-Shock 35th anniversary celebrations.

The creator of G-Shock showed off

an all sapphire crystal G-Shock prototype.

Now, nine years later, Casio has finally figured out

how to make that sapphire watch tough enough

to be called a G-Shock.

The 2017 concept watches required the crystal sections

to be held together using metal bracings.

The new MRG-D5000, however, is a fully functional G-Shock,

taking construction lessons from the MRG engineering team

that found that dividing the outer case

into multiple interacting components

could disperse impact more effectively

than a conventional single piece construction.

While the MRG-D5000's bezel and outer case

are entirely blue sapphire crystal,

sadly, unlike the 2017 concept,

the strap now isn't matching sapphire, but instead rubber.

But to round off the luxe makeover,

the MRG mark and Shock Resist

and other lettering on the face

are actually in 24-karat gold.

Would you buy this $80,000 crystal Casio

with shock resistance, 200 meters waterproofing,

solar power, radio controlled timekeeping,

world time, stopwatch, countdown timer,

and five daily alarms?

Or would you go for the Patek or the Porsche?
