Gallery: Stolen Gear Is Small Hurdle for Year-Long Photo Project

*Carol, January 1, 2012 in Tuscaloosa, AL.* __Theron Humphrey:__ "Last night all of the gear I’ve been using to make this project happen was stolen out of my truck. It's hard sitting here looking over the images of Carol, thinking about the time we spent together, and not being able to hear her voice. Ultimately I know the time I have spent with folks is more valuable than the record, but that is no comfort tonight." *Photo: Theron Humphrey*

*Steve Tilton, August 24, 2011 on Walnut Creek Road in Franklin, NC.* __Theron Humphrey:__ "My time was Steve was intense. I know a bit about the Vietnam War but sitting across from a man who walked through the jungle, machine gun in hand, is hard. Being trained to kill then told to kill no doubt changes a man. War seems necessary from space, but if you sit on the floor and listen to Steve, it all seemed so pointless." *Photo: Theron Humphrey*

*Charlotte Carroll and her children, August 11, 2011 in Statesboro, GA.* __Theron Humphrey:__ "These are folks that are aware of their impact. They’re raising goats, chickens, a fair bit of crops, and soon, bees. That is honest work for their kids – connecting them to where the bounty comes from." *Photo: Theron Humphrey*

*Greg Meyers, November 26, 2011 in Philadelphia, PA.* __Theron Humphrey:__ "It’s not too often I meet an artist who has a studio space outside in front of his house. It felt surreal, but honest, with Snoop Dogg blasting out of Greg’s window. Cars and motorcycles were zipping bye, but he kept on creating. I don’t think he’s making that work for anyone else, he’s out there doing it because something inside of him gets stirred up." *Photo: Theron Humphrey*

*Jim Dame, October 18, 2011 at 94 Brown Avenue, Johnston, RI.* __Theron Humphrey:__ "I’ve never heard a story like Jim’s before. I can’t imagine working the land, a multi-generational farm, and one morning the State wants to make a park out of your soil. But instead of making that park, they change their minds and rent the farm back to you. You’re in the same spot, but you don’t own anything. If you want to know if a man loves farming, steal his land, rent it to back to him, and see if he stays." *Photo: Theron Humphrey*

*Bullwinkle and Piggy, September 19, 2011 on Wolfsville Road in Smithsburg, MD.* __Theron Humphrey:__ "Bullwinkle and Piggy reinvigorated my passion for traveling and meeting folks. It was nice hiking a few miles of the Appalachian Trail with them. Getting a taste of their life for the next few months as they head south. I’m not sure if they are typical AT hikers, if there is a typical hiker, but when I left them after a long night of rain I had nothing but respect for them. Sometimes you just gotta grab a backpack and figure it out along the way." *Photo: Theron Humphrey*

*Noble Rawls, December 27, 2011 on South 1st Street in Nashville, TN.* __Theron Humphrey:__ "It ain’t too often that I pull a car 10 miles down the road to a scrap yard. It’s even less often that the person happens to be a world-class French horn player. Noble’s car broke down on a small street in Nashville; I figured I’d offer him some tools or a push up a hill. Turns out he had a towrope and was fed up with his car. We towed it to a scrap yard, sailing down huge hills, while Noble was giving me turn-by-turn directions over the phone." *Photo: Theron Humphrey*

*Jeeves Salazar, November 2, 2011 in Bar Harbor, ME.* __Theron Humphrey:__ "I’m always looking out for folks who drive the same truck as me. That’s why I met Jeeves. He was setting up to sell his veggies at a farmers market across from my camping spot. One handshake led us to selling veggies together, hiking through Acadia National Park, and Jeeves showing me the farm he works on. Jeeves is a good man, living a cool life. A life where he doesn’t need to e-mail in resumes for work. I like that." *Photo: Theron Humphrey*

Raised two children herself, beat cancer, and kept a seed of faith all the while. What I love most about her is that she doesn’t need much, and asks for even less." *Photo: Theron Humphrey*
